Key differences between All-Wheel Drive (AWD) and 4×4

All-Wheel Drive and 4×4 are commonly used interchangeably, but are All-Wheel Drive and 44 the same thing? Actually, they’re not, and Carl Black Hiram is here to share the key differences between All-Wheel Drive (AWD) and 4×4. Scroll down or visit us in Hiram, GA, to learn about these systems.

Where to find used cars with AWD

How does AWD work?

AWD systems are generally designed to deliver power to all four wheels continuously, and they automatically distribute power between the front and rear axles as needed based on traction conditions. Some AWD systems can also distribute power between the left and right wheels.

How does 4×4 work?

4×4 systems are typically manually engaged by the driver or automatically engaged by the vehicle’s computer system. They can often be switched between two-wheel drive (power to two wheels) and four-wheel drive (power to all four wheels). 4×4 systems are commonly found in trucks and SUVs designed for off-road use.

What is AWD usually used for?

AWD systems are commonly found in passenger cars, crossover SUVs, and high-performance vehicles. They are designed to improve traction and stability on various road surfaces, especially in slippery conditions like rain, snow, or ice.

What is 4×4 commonly used for?

4×4 systems are often found in off-road vehicles, trucks, and SUVs designed for rugged terrain. They are optimized for off-road driving situations requiring additional traction and torque.

Which is more expensive: AWD or 4×4?

AWD systems are generally simpler and less expensive compared to 4×4 systems. They are often lighter and more fuel-efficient since they do not have the same rugged components needed for serious off-road driving.

4×4 systems tend to be more complex and expensive due to additional components such as transfer cases, locking differentials, and heavy-duty axles. These components enhance off-road capabilities but can add weight and reduce fuel efficiency.
