Push-button Start vs Keyed Ignition: Which is More Secure?

Here at Carl Black Hiram Auto Superstore near Atlanta, we see all sorts of vehicles and features. One of the most common new features that is starting to become standard on more and more vehicles is push-button start. We get a lot of questions about that feature, namely:

Is push-button start more secure than keyed ignition? Or is it better to have real keys?

Car security has only improved over the years, and push-button start is one of the reasons why. Push-button start usually requires your vehicle’s key fob to be within the vehicle or the engine won’t start. This makes stealing a vehicle quite difficult without specialized equipment and more than a fair share of know-how. It is much more difficult to steal a car with push-button start than it is an old-fashioned keyed ignition.

How to Keep Your Push-button Start Secure

As we mentioned above, it is possible (though difficult) to steal a vehicle with push-button start. There are a few simple ways to minimize that already miniscule risk. The first is to store your key fob out or range of your vehicle in a signal-shielding container when at home. This makes it impossible for anyone to copy the signal. Similarly, there are signal-shielding pouches that you can put your key fob into when you’re out and about. Some key fobs also have a signal turn-off function and/or motion sensors, both of which make it impossible to copy the signal to your vehicle.
