Safety tips for driving with children

Driving with children needs a little extra care and attention compared to driving by yourself. Keep reading to learn more about what you need to keep in mind.

Keep the distractions away

Turn your phone on do not disturb or on airplane mode so you are not distracted by your phone. If you are able, use the hands-free features on your vehicle if you ever do need to contact someone. The reason you especially want to stay off your phone with besides the safety is that you don’t want to teach or normalize bad habits.

Secure everyone and everything

Double-check the booster seats and car seats to see if they are secure. Everyone should be buckled up because no matter how careful we drive, there is always the potential for an accident. Any loose items like luggage or any bulky items should also be secured. They can become hazardous in the event of an accident or a hard brake.

Don’t leave your kids in the car

Many children have died due to heatstroke from staying in a vehicle too long. Always take your children out of the vehicle no matter how long you plan to stay. As a way to remind yourself there are children in the back seat, leave a toy in the front seat or put important items like a purse or wallet in the back to force yourself to look back before you leave.
